Signing Baby

Last week was the last week of Al's 3 month vacation. He retired in November, and started his new job today. So...since he was gong to be home, Logan spent the weekend with us last week. It was a welcome visit, because the weather has made it almost impossible to spend time with him over the past 2 months. In fact, we have only seen him 2x since the beginning of December. I know, it is heartbreaking isn't it?

Anyway, he is getting sooooo big and has such a big personality. He is walking everywhere and is into anything he can get his hands on. However, he still isn't trying to talk, so Alyssa has taught Logan how to communicate with her through American Sign Language. He is so cute. He knows the signs for milk, eat, more, thank you, and has made up his own sign for please.

The sign for milk is just like the one on Meet the Fockers. You know the one that looks like your milking a cow? Yep, that's it. To do the sign for eat (or food) you place your fingers together like you're holding someting and direct them toward your open mouth. Below are some shots that I caught of him saying more, please, and thank you. There is a funny story behind the sign for please.

We were in Kansas City with Alyssa and Logan and we were sitting at a table getting ready to eat. Alyssa told Logan to say please, and he placed his fists under his cheeks, pushed them up, and smiled. We all started laughing because it was so darn cute. That reinforced him to keep doing it so now it is Logan's sign for please. It isn't the sign for please, but it totally should be. We don't know where it came from, but apparently he's a pretty creative and smart little boy.

This is his sign for "more". It is supposed to be the fingers touching, but he does a fist bump. Originally he clapped, but that sounded more demanding so I'm glad he's gotten closer to the real sign on this one.

This is NOT the sign for "please". The sign for please is rubbing a circle with your right hand on your left shoulder. However, this please will get a chubby little baby with big brown eyes anything he wants. I think we need to contact the American Sign Language folks and petition that them to change it.

I know this shot is blurry, but it was the only one I got of him signing "thank you". I love you Logan, and thank you for being my grandbaby.
